Not illustrated. 1889 Excerpt: ...of Iheodotos is indeed entitled xepi iovSaicov, ('On the Jews"); but this seems to be a general title that Alexander Polyhistor prefixed to almost all his excerpts. The contents show that Sichem, the "Holy Town " of the Samaritans, must have been the object of this poem. In pathetic verses it is described: "Between two high hills, covered with forest and grass, Stands ancient Sichem, The Holy Town, placed at their feet And surrounded by walls of smooth stones." Here also we find the usual mixture of Grecian and Jewish legends, and the remnants of a Hellenistic Midrash of which traces can still be found in the Rabbinical Haggada. It has been surmised that this Theodotos is the same who is mentioned in Jewish sources as a participant in a religious dispute between Jews and Samaritans which was ordered by Ptolemy Philometer, and in which both parties claimed the victory. If that be the case, his accounts of the conflicts between the sons of Jacob and Sichem were probably unfavorable to the Jews. HISTORY OF THE INDEPENDENT ORDER B'NE B'RITH CHAPTER XXXIII.
